Auburndale was settled in the 1880s and incorporated in 1913, developing as a citrus-shipping and rail town along what's now US Highway 92 between Lakeland and Winter Haven. The city grew up around several small lakes within its borders, which earned it the nickname "The City of Lakes" locally. Like much of Polk County, its early economy centered on citrus groves and phosphate mining before diversifying into the broader Central Florida economy it's part of today.
