A little Haines City history

The settlement started out as Clay Cut, named for a deep cut the South Florida Railroad made through a clay bank. Settlers persuaded the railroad to build a station by renaming the town after Colonel Henry S. Haines, a railroad official. The town was incorporated in 1914 and became a city in 1925. Citrus carried the economy for most of the 20th century. Today the city is mostly known for new home construction and its location between Tampa and Orlando.

Haines City soil and weather: what it means for concrete

Much of Haines City sits on sandy ridge soil that drains quickly. That's good for a slab, but the sand washes out easily at edges and under downspouts. Ask for proper grading and a thickened edge on driveways and patios.

On new subdivision lots, fill was often brought in when the lot was graded. Make sure the base is compacted before the pour, especially where a new pool deck or patio extension sits over recently disturbed ground.

Hot, stormy summers mean early-morning pours and careful curing. Pool decks should get a light-colored or cool-deck finish, since dark concrete gets uncomfortably hot underfoot.

Permits in Haines City

Homes inside city limits are permitted through the City of Haines City. Some homes with a Haines City mailing address are actually in unincorporated Polk County, which issues those permits instead. Many subdivisions also have HOA rules on driveway width, color, and finish, so check those before you sign a quote.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm with the local building department before work starts.
