A little Mulberry history

Mulberry grew up around a railroad stop on the Bone Valley branch. Freight for the nearby phosphate plants was marked "put off at the big mulberry tree," and the station built beside that tree gave the town its name. Phosphate mining boomed in the 1890s, the town incorporated in 1901, and for decades it sat in the middle of some of the largest phosphate mines in the world. The Mulberry Phosphate Museum now occupies the old train depot next to where the tree stood.

Where we see work in Mulberry

  • Downtown Mulberry. Older block and frame homes where driveway and sidewalk replacement is the usual request.
  • Along SR 37 toward Lakeland. Newer homes and small businesses that need driveways, aprons, and parking pads.
  • Bradley Junction, Nichols, and Pierce. Small mining-era communities nearby with rural lots and long driveways.
  • Reclaimed land around town. Former mine land that has been, or is being, developed for new housing.

Mulberry soil and weather: what it means for concrete

Mulberry is surrounded by mined and reclaimed phosphate land. Reclaimed ground can include filled areas and clay settling zones that compress differently than natural sandy soil. If your home was built on reclaimed land, ask your contractor to check how well the ground under the slab is compacted, and expect them to recommend a thicker base or reinforcement for driveways.

Natural soils outside the mined areas are sandy and drain fast, but they wash out easily at slab edges. Downspouts and grading matter as much as the concrete itself.

SR 60 and SR 37 carry heavy truck traffic. If your driveway apron meets a busy road or you park work trucks on it, ask for 5 to 6 inches of concrete with rebar instead of the standard 4 inches.

Permits in Mulberry

Properties inside city limits are permitted through the City of Mulberry. Unincorporated addresses with a Mulberry mailing address go through Polk County. Work that touches a state road right-of-way, like SR 60 or SR 37, can involve the Florida Department of Transportation. Your contractor should confirm which office applies before scheduling the pour.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm with the local building department before work starts.

Mulberry concrete FAQs

Is there a concrete contractor based in Mulberry?+

We don't currently list one with an office in Mulberry. The contractors shown on this page are based in nearby Lakeland, Bartow, and other Polk County towns and serve the Mulberry area. A job request is the fastest way to find one that's available.

Does building on reclaimed phosphate land affect a driveway?+

It can. Reclaimed land may include fill or clay that settles over time. A good contractor will compact the base well and may suggest a thicker slab or rebar. If the house itself shows settling, have that looked at before adding new concrete.

Who handles permits in Mulberry?+

The City of Mulberry inside city limits, and Polk County outside them. Driveways that connect to a state road can also involve FDOT. Ask your contractor to confirm and include the permit in the quote.

How thick should a driveway be if I park a work truck on it?+

Most residential driveways are 4 inches thick. For regular heavy trucks or trailers, 5 to 6 inches with rebar is a common recommendation. Your contractor can size it for the actual loads.
