A little Lake Wales history
The Lake Wales Land Company bought land around Lake Wailes and founded the town in 1911, betting on lumber, turpentine, and citrus. The town was incorporated in 1917. Bok Tower, built by publisher Edward Bok on Iron Mountain just north of town, was dedicated in 1929 with President Calvin Coolidge in attendance. The city lists Iron Mountain at 298 feet above sea level, among the highest points on the Florida peninsula.
Where we see work in Lake Wales
- Historic downtown and Lake Wailes. Older homes and brick streets where sidewalk, step, and driveway repair are common.
- Mountain Lake. Historic estate neighborhood where decorative finishes and careful matching of existing work matter.
- Highland Park and Babson Park. Smaller communities on the ridge with larger lots and long driveways.
- US 27 corridor. Newer homes and businesses that need driveways, aprons, and parking pads.
Lake Wales soil and weather: what it means for concrete
The Lake Wales Ridge is deep, fast-draining sand, often with a red-brown color from iron-rich layers. Sand drains well under a slab but erodes easily, so edges, downspouts, and the low side of a driveway need attention.
Unlike most of Polk County, Lake Wales has real slopes. A driveway that climbs or drops needs a broom finish for grip, control joints placed with the grade, and a plan for where rainwater goes at the bottom.
Summers are hot and stormy, and winters are mild. Early-morning pours and proper curing are standard here, as they are everywhere in Central Florida.
Permits in Lake Wales
Properties inside city limits are permitted through the City of Lake Wales. Addresses outside city limits, such as Babson Park, generally go through Polk County. The Village of Highland Park is its own small municipality. Your contractor should confirm the right office before the pour.
This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm with the local building department before work starts.

Lake Wales concrete FAQs
Are there concrete contractors in Lake Wales?+
We don't currently list one based in Lake Wales. The contractors on this page are based nearby and serve the area. A job request is the quickest way to find one that's available for your project.
Does a sloped driveway cost more?+
Usually somewhat more. Slopes take extra form work, careful finishing for traction, and sometimes drainage work at the bottom. The difference depends on how steep it is and how much grading is needed.
Why do concrete edges crack on sandy lots?+
Water running off the slab washes sand out from under the edge, leaving it unsupported. Proper grading, gutters that discharge away from the slab, and a thickened edge help prevent it.
Who issues permits for concrete work in Lake Wales?+
The City of Lake Wales inside city limits, and Polk County or the local municipality outside them. Your contractor should confirm which applies and include the permit in the quote.
