A little Plant City history

Native people knew the area as Ichepucksassa, and early settlers called it Cork. Henry B. Plant's South Florida Railroad reached it in 1883, the town was renamed for Plant in 1884, and it was incorporated in 1885. Strawberries became the signature crop, and the Plant City Lions Club started the Florida Strawberry Festival in 1930. The festival still runs every late winter and draws visitors from all over the state.

Where we see work in Plant City

  • Historic downtown. Older homes with narrow driveways, ribbon strips, and walkways that are often due for replacement.
  • Walden Lake. Established golf-course neighborhood where driveway resurfacing, pool decks, and lanai extensions come up most.
  • Dover and Turkey Creek. Rural lots west and south of town with long driveways, equipment pads, and barn slabs.
  • Springhead and the north side. Larger parcels where RV pads and shop slabs are common.

Plant City soil and weather: what it means for concrete

The ground around Plant City is mostly sandy soil over limestone, the same karst geology that runs under much of Central Florida. In January 2010 an 11-day freeze led farms in the Dover/Plant City area to pump huge amounts of groundwater for crop protection. The aquifer dropped about 60 feet, and the Southwest Florida Water Management District received about 140 sinkhole reports. If your property has any history of settling, ask your contractor about compaction testing before a big pour.

Much of the area is flat and low, so standing water after summer storms is common. A driveway or patio needs enough slope to shed water away from the house, and a thickened edge where it meets soft ground.

Summer highs sit in the low 90s with afternoon storms most days from June to September. Crews pour early in the morning and keep the slab damp while it cures so the surface doesn't crack from drying too fast.

Permits in Plant City

Homes inside city limits go through the City of Plant City. Addresses outside city limits, including Dover and Turkey Creek, fall under Hillsborough County. A new driveway apron that ties into a public road usually needs a right-of-way permit. Ask your contractor who will pull the permit and include it in the quote.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm with the local building department before work starts.

Plant City concrete FAQs

Do Lakeland concrete contractors work in Plant City?+

Many do. Plant City is about 10 miles from Lakeland on I-4, and several crews in our directory list eastern Hillsborough County as part of their service area. Send a job request and we'll match you with one that covers your address.

Who issues concrete permits in Plant City?+

Inside city limits, the City of Plant City. Outside city limits, Hillsborough County. Driveway aprons that connect to a public road usually need a right-of-way permit as well. Your contractor should know which one applies and pull it for you.

Are sinkholes a concern for a new slab in Plant City?+

They're worth taking seriously. The area sits on limestone, and the 2010 freeze event caused around 140 reported sinkholes nearby. Most slabs are fine with a properly compacted base, but if you see settling, cracks that keep growing, or depressions in the yard, have the ground checked before you pour.

When is the best time of year to pour concrete in Plant City?+

Late fall through spring is the easiest stretch: cooler mornings and less rain. Summer pours are fine with an early start and careful curing, but afternoon storms can push the schedule around.
