Why 1.125 Blocks Per Square Foot
The figure most masons use for a standard block is 1.125 blocks per square foot of wall, and it comes from nominal dimensions rather than the block you can measure with a tape.
A standard dense concrete block is nominally 8 inches by 16 inches on its face, but the actual unit measures 7 5/8 by 15 5/8 inches. The missing 3/8 inch in each direction is the mortar joint. Nominal dimensions include that joint, which is exactly what you want when calculating how much wall one block covers.
The arithmetic: 8 divided by 12 is 0.667 feet, 16 divided by 12 is 1.333 feet, and their product is 0.889 square feet of wall per block. One divided by 0.889 gives 1.125 blocks per square foot. Using actual dimensions instead would undercount your order, because it ignores the joint each block occupies.
Block Width Doesn't Change The Count
This surprises people the first time. A 4-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch, and 12-inch block all share the same 8 by 16 inch nominal face — only the width through the wall differs. So a 100 square foot wall needs the same 113 blocks whether you build it in 4-inch or 12-inch units.
What width does change is everything else: the weight per block, the price per block, the grout volume if you fill the cores, and the load the wall can carry. Half-blocks at 8 by 8 inches are the exception — they cover half the face area, so they count double per square foot.
Mortar And Grout Quantities
Mortar is estimated at three bags of mix per 100 blocks, which is the standard planning figure for a 3/8 inch joint. Actual yield varies with joint thickness, how absorbent the block is, and how much mortar the mason wastes, so treat it as a starting point and confirm with your supplier.
Grout is separate from mortar. Mortar bonds the blocks together at the joints; grout fills the hollow cores, usually where rebar has been placed. In Florida, reinforced and grouted cells are common in structural masonry because of wind-load requirements, so if your wall is engineered, check the drawings for which cells get filled rather than assuming.
Don't Forget Openings
Subtract the square footage of doors, windows, and any other openings from the gross wall area before calculating. The calculator has a field for this.
Do keep some of that back as waste, though. Blocks cut to fit around an opening produce offcuts that often can't be reused, which is part of why a 5 to 10 percent waste allowance is standard even on a simple wall.
